NASAS: a portable low weight chemoresistive nanosensor for gas detection in space and other environments. It is designed for the safety of astronauts and studied to be integrated on intra or extra vehicular suit, as well as in spacecrafts. The project aims to design, manufacture and test a portable sensor device, with very low consumption and low weight, capable of continuously monitoring air quality in space environments (such as space stations, launch and re-entry capsule systems, manned ships, launch sites) as well as in other critical areas (gas monitoring for environmental monitoring, chemical process control, agriculture, and medical applications). The primary use involves monitoring the air of the spacecraft to safeguard the health of the space crew, continuously detecting any possible inhalation of harmful gases. The secondary use is addressed to the detection and monitoring of gases in other fields and environments where the instrumentation used, e.g. based on light-matter interactions (IR sensors and chemiluminescent spectroscopes) and/or mass spectrometry, very expensive, heavy and large, may suffer damages or malfunction. Since unwanted environmental gases must be detected in real time, NASAS provides, in addition to direct communication with the user, the possibility of uploading the acquired data online for remote control. Its design is coordinated by PMS – Pasquali Microwave Systems (a SME space company) as a Prime in collaboration with the University of Florence – Department of Information Engineering, the University of Ferrara – Department of Physics and Earth Sciences – Sensors Team and the Foundation Bruno Kessler (FBK) of Trento – Unit Micro-Nano characterization and fabrication Facility (MNF), as sub-contractors. Already in the prototype stage NASAS has aroused great interest by space companies. PMS expects to launch NASAS on the national and European markets within 12 months with a forecast towards the global market within 18 months.
